Abstract:

The City Of Harran In The Western Sources The city of Harran was an intersection point throughout the history of caravan routes, that's why its position was every time strategically important. Harran, which was a settlement for various civilizations in every period, is of course also very important for the western world, because there is a lot of information about this city in their own resources. One of these sources is the doctoral dissertation by Adam Mez " Geschichte der Stadt Harran in Mesopotamien bis zum Einfall der Araber " (History of the city Harran in Mesopotamia until the invasion of the Arabs). In the history of Syriac, Harran was a center of worshipers to the moon god " Sin ". The Assyrian kings went to this temple and worshiped. When Alexander the Great and the Ancient Greeks had seized the city, they began to worship their own gods. Because of this idolatry, the world of Christianity named Harran with the name of Hellenopolis. It's written in the Old Testament that Abraham, his father, his wife Sarah and his nephew Lot lived for a while in Harran. The same source says that his grandson Jakob also lived in this city. The city Harran was conquered by ʿIyāḍ bin Ġānam in 639 and included in the Islamic world. Just as the city of Harran is important for the Islamic world, Harran is also important for the Western world. As the city of Harran is mentioned in the Bible, especially the Christians were interested in the geographical and political structure of this city. Western sources are filled with such information.
